Olean General Hospital

Women's Imaging

Olean General Hospital offers comprehensive breast cancer diagnostic testing including mammograms, ultrasounds and stereo-tactic biopsies using state-of-the-art equipment and certified technicians.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a set of x-rays that allows a practitioner to find lumps too small to feel in a breast self-examination - even as small as a grain of salt. A screening mammography is the single most effective method of detecting breast cancer in its early stages.

What is a Stererotactic Breast Biopsy?

Stereotactic (or X-ray guided) Breast Biopsy, is a procedure using a tiny hollow needle to take a small sample of the suspicious lesion that can help to detect breast cancer in its earliest sate.  Stereotactic breast biopsies are often used as an alternative to open surgical biopsies, and use a smaller tissue sample. As such, they are much less likely to leave a scar, and can take samples from a smaller area. During a stereotactic breast biopsy, a special mammography machine is used to pinpoint an area of change in the tissue. After a sample of this tissue is collected by the surgeon with the aid of the x-ray tech, the tissue sample is sent to the lab where a determination is made as to whether the tissue is cancerous.

What about 4D Ultrasounds?

For a pregnant mother, using ultrasound to check the health and well-being of her unborn baby can represent not just peace of mind, but an opportunity to check for diseases or problems and begin treatment sooner. Olean General Hospital is proud to offer state of the art 4D ultrasounds for a variety of diagnostic tests, including the monitoring of pregnant mothers or evaluating suspicious lumps found during a mammogram. For pregnancies, 4D ultrasounds take the traditional ultrasound images and provide real-time three-dimensional imagery and movement of the baby in the womb.

Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) Ultrasound System

The ACUSON S2000 Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) ultrasound system is a dedicated breast imaging system which provides full-field volumes of the entire breast in approximately 10 minutes, offering patients scanning that is easier and more comfortable. The system is often used when a regular mammogram finds abnormalities such as cysts or lumps.

Full-field volumes of the entire breast are acquired quickly for a comprehensive semi-automated review that reduces operator dependence and the time patients wait for results. Physicians can look at the never-before-seen sonographic coronal plane of the breast, yielding a more understandable representation of the breast’s total architecture for a more confident diagnosis.
