The Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Olean General Hospital (OGH) has received a special four year accreditation with distinction for its hyperbaric oxygen services from the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS).

OGH is the only hospital in Western New York and one of only about 24 percent of facilities nationally to earn accreditation with distinction. In addition, OGH is only one of two centers in Western New York accredited as a Level 1 site, meaning the center treats acute and chronic conditions 24/7, 365 days per year.

Olean General’s Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine focuses on the treatment and evaluation of chronic, problematic and non-healing wounds using the latest generation of wound healing technology under the direction of specially trained wound care physicians. The center utilizes hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers as part of the treatment of acute and chronic non-healing wounds.

“The accreditation with distinction demonstrates the extent to which Olean General Hospital, and our partner, Precision Health Care, are dedicated to excellence and providing the best hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients cared for at the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and chief executive officer, Olean General Hospital and Upper Allegheny Health System.

UHMS is the nation’s gold standard accrediting organization for hyperbaric medicine programs and recognizes clinical hyperbaric facilities that demonstrate their commitment to patient care and facility safety. Accreditation is normally for three years, but the four year accreditation with distinction is achieved by clearly demonstrating the minimum conformance has been exceeded in specific activities deserving the added recognition as a hyperbaric facility. Currently, there are 34 hospitals in New York state with an accredited program through UHMS, seven have accreditation with distinction.

“Accreditation is a rigorous process and UHMS accreditation means the patient service at Olean General Hospital is recognized as a Center of Excellence for wound care and hyperbaric medicine,” said Pierre E. Dionne, M.D, medical director for hyperbaric medicine.

“As a physician I look at this accreditation from such an internationally renowned certification organization as an affirmation that we are providing the highest level of safe, quality, and state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy to our patients,” Dr. Dionne said. “Our hyperbaric and wound care staff worked closely with OGH and Precision Health Care to ensure that our facility provides the highest level of patient care. This was a large undertaking with more than six months preparation prior to the on-site survey. This strong team effort and approach made the UHMS certification possible,” said Arthur M. Goldstein, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of the Wound Center.

A survey team comprised of a physician, nurse and technician from the UHMS spent two days reviewing and surveying the hyperbaric chambers, facility and processes for accreditation. The survey team examined 25 different focus areas of the hyperbaric facilities program, including compliance with state and local codes for the facility, adequacy of the chamber and equipment, staff training, patient safety, and quality of care. The UHMS, which is comprised largely of scientists and medical professionals, conducts research and sets standards for applying hyperbaric oxygen in medical situations.

“The UHMS accreditation with distinction for our Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine is one more indicator that we are performing at a high level with respect to safety and quality,” Finan said.
