Olean General Hospital honors volunteers

Posted on: 03/15/2018

Crystal Kling, volunteer services coordinator, OGH, center, thanks volunteers Stella Pancio and Marge Schaumleffel during the hospital’s volunteer appreciation dinner at Good Times of Olean.

Olean General Hospital honored its volunteers for their time and service to the hospital during a recognition dinner recently at Good Times of Olean.

The hospital recognized 109 active volunteers who donated over 13,000 hours of service over the last year.

“The entire hospital celebrates and salutes our volunteers and extends our sincere thanks and appreciation for all of their tremendous support of Olean General Hospital,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and chief executive officer, Upper Allegheny Health System and Olean General Hospital.

“Olean General has numerous volunteers and we are grateful to gather them together at this recognition dinner to honor all of their contributions throughout the year. Many do not work within the hospitals walls. There are several who make baby hats and lap blankets at home or with a group. These volunteers not only donate their time but also the materials to make their beautiful creations. Babies born at OGH receive hats and the auxiliary also gives lap blankets to our subacute rehab patients. Each one of the donated items brings comfort and joy to the patients who receive them. The hard work and love that goes into them is truly appreciated,” said Crystal Kling, volunteer services coordinator, OGH.

Kling thanked all volunteers for their time and generosity but also noted a few special recognitions.

Linda Conklin-Taft has been a long time auxiliary member but stepped into the assistant treasurer position a couple years ago. She is always willing to help out and take on special projects when asked. She has been an amazing asset to the OGH Auxiliary board, Kling said.
OGH also honored its two oldest volunteers who are both in the “90 plus club.” Marge Schaumleffel has been a volunteer and auxiliary member for 38 years. Marge sits on the auxiliary board and rarely misses monthly board meetings. Stella Pancio has been a volunteer at OGH for a few years. She diligently makes adorable baby hats, mittens, and booties at home and brings them in for the maternity ward monthly. “These ladies don’t let their age interfere with their drive to give back to OGH and their community,” Kling said.

One special volunteer at OGH is a lady who wears many hats. Joyce Moser, volunteers as a Eucharistic minister and with the art cart program on a weekly basis. Joyce has been a volunteer and auxiliary member for the past 13 years. She also acted as auxiliary president for the past several years, which includes responsibility of chairing the annual Strawberry Festival. Joyce puts in countless hours both at the hospital and at home to make sure that everything for the festival is taken care of. The day of the festival Joyce is always making sure that everyone else is taken care of.

“Our volunteers are simply priceless. We are inspired by the sacrifices they make and by the gift of their time and talents. It’s nothing less than impressive,” said Karen Fohl, vice president, institutional advancement, OGH.

Volunteers of all ages and abilities provide a variety of services for the hospital including VanGogh drivers, patient escorts, art cart, compassionate companion, mail delivery, runners and much more.
