OGH’s subacute rehab earns certification

Posted on: 11/15/2016

Olean General Hospital’s (OGH) subacute rehabilitation unit has been recertified as a Functional Independent Measure (FIM) credentialed facility by Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation at the University of Buffalo.

FIM, a nationally accepted scale, is used to measure the functional abilities of inpatients undergoing rehabilitation and shows progress over the course of their treatment.

Achieving and maintaining this certification requires 80 percent of staff to pass a certification test every three years. This is the third time OGH subacute rehabilitation achieved this certification, according to Amy Booker, RN, clinical supervisor, subacute rehab at OGH.

OGH’s subacute inpatient rehabilitation program is for patients who need specialized care following an acute hospital stay for medical or surgical reasons and helps them to transition from the hospital to their home, said Jennifer Ruggles, RN, nursing director.

“The FIM is designed to be sensitive to change in an individual over the course of their comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation,” Ruggles said. “This 18-point scale monitors performance levels such as walking, eating and dressing, and other aspects such as mood and cognitive function. By following the FIM scale, we closely monitor our patients to meet all their needs. A healthy patient who doesn’t need rehabilitation has a perfect score of 134. The national average score for a patient upon discharge is 80 and ours is 95.”
