OGH to discontinue valet parking

Posted on: 09/25/2017

Citing underutilization and the availability of more convenient parking at the hospital, Olean General Hospital, member hospital of Upper Allegheny Health System, is discontinuing its valet parking program, effective Oct. 27.

“The valet parking program has been a nice convenience. However, the utilization of the program has dropped by more than 50 percent to only about 45 cars per day, down from more than 100 cars per day in 2012,” said Dennis McCarthy, hospital spokesperson. “For the last several months we have been reviewing the feasibility of continuing OGH’s valet parking service. After a careful look at the service a decision has been made to discontinue valet parking at OGH,” he said.

McCarthy explained that the hospital opened the Mildred Milliman Outpatient Surgery Center in 2012 across the street from OGH and immediately valet parking demand began to decline because the outpatient center has its own dedicated parking lot. “In addition, the hospital has opened up additional parking along the east side of the hospital, only a few steps away from the front entrance,” he said. “We have noticed more people prefer to self-park rather than use the service.”

“Given the drop in utilization, the service can no longer be really justified,” McCarthy said. He noted that visitors and patients may still be dropped off at the main entrance and handicapped parking continues to be available immediately in front of the main entrance.

McCarthy noted that for similar reasons, Bradford Regional Medical Center, also a UAHS member hospital, curtailed valet parking in November 2012.
