Posted on: 12/01/2015

Olean General Hospital (OGH) opened the doors to its new patient Independent Living Laboratory on November 20. The 450 sq. ft. room is part of the hospital’s Subacute Rehabilitation Unit and is designed to help rehabilitation patients more easily make the transition from hospital to independent living at home.

The unit allows patients to practice independent living skills within the therapy environment through simulated activities in order to safely return home. The lab features new equipment such as a washer and dryer, stove, refrigerator and living room furniture enabling patients to practice all activities of daily living. The unit also features new kitchen cabinetry, love seat, recliner, bed, dining room tables and chairs and residential carpeting.

“The Independent Living Lab enables staff to have a better picture of the patient’s capabilities prior to discharge and ensure they and their loved ones can feel confident and secure that they can carry out the necessary activities to be safe and independent upon their return home,” Jeff Zewe, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

“Lab staff works closely patients and family members, considering them part of the therapy plan, in order to ensure success in working towards independence. Caregivers and loved ones better understand what type of assistance their recovering family member may require so that we can work together as a team to ensure any necessary support is in place prior to their discharge,” said Jennifer Ruggles, RN, Nurse Manager of the Independent Living Lab and Subacute Rehabilitation Unit at OGH.

The cost of the new unit is approximately $22,000.
