Olean General Hospital honored its volunteers for their time and service to the hospital during a recognition dinner April 12, which was held during National Volunteer Week.

The hospital recognized 150 active volunteers who donated over 17,000 hours of service over the last year.

“Our volunteers work in a wide variety of departments throughout the hospital but we also have many volunteers who work at home making baby hats, mittens, booties, and blankets. With our volunteers so spread out, it is great to get them all together once a year to show them how much they are truly appreciated,” said Crystal Page, volunteer services coordinator, OGH.

“The entire hospital celebrates and salutes our volunteers and extends our sincere thanks and appreciation for all of their tremendous support of Olean General Hospital,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and chief executive officer, Upper Allegheny Health System and Olean General Hospital.

Page thanked all volunteers for their time and generosity but also noted three special recognitions.

Harold Price of Olean has volunteered for four years, driving the VanGogh and working in the mailroom two to five days per week. He also is an auxiliary member where he chairs the membership committee. He is always asking what else needs done or what he can do to help, Page said.

Jean Wright of Allegany wears many hats and has volunteered for three years, helping in the human resources department, Mildred Milliman Radiation Center, driving the VanGogh and, most recently, serving as co-chair of the auxiliary’s annual Strawberry Festival.

Roger Lord of Salamanca is a longtime volunteer. For 16 years, he has faithfully come in and serves as a runner for multiple departments. He’s also known as the “candy man,” stopping by the hospital’s gift shop throughout the day to purchase candy to brighten people’s day or lift their spirits.

“Our volunteers are simply priceless. We are inspired by the sacrifices they make and by the gift of their time and talents. It’s nothing less than impressive,” said Karen Fohl, vice president, institutional advancement, foundation president, OGH.

Volunteers of all ages and abilities provide a variety of services for the hospital including VanGogh drivers, patient escorts, art/library cart, compassionate companion, mail delivery, runners and much more.
