OGH Honors Nurses at Seventh Annual Hilal Nursing Recognition Program

Posted on: 06/03/2011

Olean General Hospital (OGH) honored its nursing staff during the seventh annual Hilal Nursing Recognition Program on Thursday, May 12 in conjunction with National Nurses Week. The hospital presented its annual Nurse of Distinction Award to Elizabeth Mitchell, MS, ANP, FNP-BC, while Lynette Findlay, LPN was named Outstanding LPN, and Kim Kottwitz, RN was selected as Outstanding Staff Nurse.

“I congratulate Elizabeth, Lynette and Kim for their outstanding achievements,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System and member hospitals Bradford Regional Medical Center and Olean General Hospital.  “These three nurses each demonstrate the passion and dedication that we value from our nurses. We thank them, and all of our nurses, for helping our hospital fulfill its mission of providing excellent care in response to the health care needs of the community.”

The Hilal Nursing Recognition Program was established in 2005 by Drs. Ahmad and Naheed Hilal in an effort to express their profound appreciation of the important work that nurses accomplish on a daily basis. The event annually highlights three nurses for their dedication to the hospital and its patients.

“Our hospital has worked hard to provide a dynamic and comprehensive set of services for the community,” said Dr. Ahmad Hilal. “These services cannot be effectively and efficiently managed without skilled nurses.   I congratulate and salute all of our nurses who work hard every day to meet that challenge.”

Ms. Mitchell has been in the nursing profession for over 30 years, and currently works as a nurse practitioner in the Marie Lorenz Dialysis Center. She also oversees the nephrology office of Muhammed T. Javed, M.D. in the Dialysis and Medical Services Building. Ms. Mitchell is a strong patient advocate in raising awareness for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes throughout the community. In 2010, she was presented with the Gift of Life Award from the National Kidney Foundation of Western New York for her tireless dedication and significant contributions to the nephrology community.

Ms. Findlay has been working at Olean General Hospital since 2006 and has been serving patients in the 3A wing of the hospital for the last three years. She is described by her colleagues as having a great rapport with her patients, and often volunteers to help in different departments when needed. Ms. Findlay has demonstrated an exceptional teaching ability, and often works with students in the New Visions program during their clinical rotations.

Ms. Kottwitz joined OGH in 1991 and currently works in the Surgical Services Department. She had previously served in the Medical Surgical Department, along with Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Ambulatory Surgery and Endoscopy. She graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing and holds her Associates Degree in Nursing from Jamestown Community College. She is also an active participant in community events, serving as a key coordinator for the 5K Walk for Leukemia and Lymphoma.

“The Hilal Nursing Recognition Program, where we honor our most distinguished nurses, is the highlight of our National Nurses Week at Olean General Hospital,” said Jeff Zewe, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Olean General Hospital.  “With all the changes and advancements in healthcare technology, one constant that remains is the need for bedside nurses to deliver care in a personal, compassionate and empathetic fashion. This personal touch can never be replaced and is the essence of healing both physically and spiritually. Creating those special moments is what nursing is all about and I would like to thank our Nurse of Distinction winners and all of the nurses at OGH for working so hard to heal those we serve in the community.”
