OGH DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAM MERITS ADA RECOGNITION

Posted on: 03/05/2015

The prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was recently awarded to the Olean General Hospital Diabetes Self-Management Education program. The program was the first “recognized” program west of the Hudson in New York State and originally recognized in March 1993.

The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs for a quality program.

Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management. Mary Fay, RDN, CDE and Barbara Walker, RN, CDE are the primary program faculty with Rebekah Malone RN, CDE and Michael Williams, RDN providing additional self-management education. “Recognition assures the consumer that he or she will receive high-quality service,” said Mary Fay, RDN, CDE. Education Recognition status is awarded for four years.

The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program at OGH is the longest running ADA Recognized Program in Western New York. The OGH program provides individual and group Diabetes self-management education. The program has a 96% patient satisfaction score among patients who attend the classes,” Fay said. For every one percent reduction in results of HbA1c blood tests, the risk of developing eye, kidney, and nerve disease is reduced by 40 percent while the risk of heart attack is reduced by 14 percent. Those who attended the OGH program showed an average reduction of 1.35%.

Olean General Hospital offers both individual and group education through physician referral.

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 29.1 million people or 9.3% of the population in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 21 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 8.1 million people are not aware that they have this disease. Each day approximately 4,657 people are diagnosed with diabetes. One in 12 New Yorkers has diabetes.
