OGH announces partnership with Unyts

Posted on: 01/10/2019

Unyts Community Blood Services, Buffalo NY, became the primary provider of blood products for Olean General Hospital Jan.1.

“Olean General Hospital is pleased to partner with Unyts Community Blood Services for our blood product needs,” said William Mills, MD, senior vice president, quality and professional affairs, OGH. “Unyts has been servicing hospitals for more than 30 years through organ, eye and tissue donation programs.

Unyts established blood services in 2007 and is now the primary supplier of blood products for Kaleida Health, Erie County Medical Center, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, Eastern Niagara Health and Wyoming County Community Health System (NY). Most recently Unyts Community Blood Services became the blood supplier for Bradford Regional Medical Center, Brooks Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, NY and TLC Health, Irving, NY.

“A continual and reliable supply of blood products is critical to any hospital. Without blood products our hospital simply could not function. In addition the purchase of blood products is a significant expense at OGH. Our partnership with Unyts offers significant savings for OGH on blood products,” Mills said. “Through Unyts’ Community Blood Services, both new and existing blood donors have an opportunity to help local patients at OGH, and the gift of life they are providing through blood products will help to save our organization much-needed dollars. All the blood collected by Unyts in Olean will be available for local patients in need,” he said.

“Community blood banks concentrate on fulfilling the blood needs of a single region. Often as a result of this locally-driven operation, donation rates rise among the area population and costs decrease on the part of area purchasers,” said Mark Simon, President & CEO of Unyts. “Community blood banks are neighbors helping neighbors – and by giving blood with Unyts you are making sure your family, friends, neighbors and other members of the community have blood available when they need it.”

It is Unyts’ responsibility to answer the call for blood at local hospitals and ensure that there is an adequate supply for patients in need. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and over 41,000 donations are required each day to meet this need. The very young, from the tiniest of preemies in a hospital’s neonatal unit, to an elderly patient suffering from a blood disorder, all benefit from blood’s life-sustaining qualities. In keeping blood donation, processing and distribution community-based, Unyts is saving hospitals as much as 30% per unit of blood. This is needed savings which will be reflected back into patient care and other hospital needs

The first Unyts blood drive in Olean will be Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at OGH. Those interested in donating blood can log on to www.unyts.org and click on Donate Blood.

Organizations interested in hosting a future Unyts blood drive or those interested in becoming a volunteer may call Amanda Farrell at 716-566-3925.
