Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS) today announced that Muhammed Javed, MD has been named Physician of the Year by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Western New York. The Foundation selected Dr. Javed for his efforts in significantly enhancing the quality of care for patients suffering from kidney problems in Southwestern New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania.

“Dr. Javed is a tremendous asset to our healthcare system and member hospitals,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System and member hospitals Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH).  “We’re proud that he was selected Physician of the Year by the National Kidney Foundation of Western New York. This significant honor highlights Dr. Javed’s numerous contributions that have enabled kidney patients in our area to receive the highest standard of care.”

The award was presented to Dr. Javed during the annual Gift of Life Celebration on March 24 in Buffalo. The National Kidney Foundation of Western New York is a volunteer organization that seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, and improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases. The Physician of the Year award is given to physicians who show exemplary dedication to their patients, support the NKF mission by volunteering their time at patient programs and service events, and demonstrate a passion for helping the over 170,000 residents of Western New York that are living with kidney disease.

“Dr. Javed embodies the exceptional level of dedication that we value from our medical staff,” said William F. Mills, M.D., MMM, CPE, FACPE, CMSL, FAAFP, Senior Vice President of Quality and Professional Affairs at Upper Allegheny Health System. “Not only has Dr. Javed played a significant role in improving the lives of kidney patients throughout the greater Olean and Bradford communities, but he is also a tremendous leader and great representative of Upper Allegheny Health System.”

Dr. Javed received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Ross University School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine and Nephrology Fellowship at Long Island College Hospital, State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate in Brooklyn. In 1995, Dr. Javed moved to the Allegheny region and established a nephrology practice in Bradford. Due to the extraordinary need for chronic kidney care in the area, he expanded his practice to Olean, and helped establish the Marie Lorenz Dialysis Unit at Olean General Hospital.

Dr. Javed currently serves on the medical staff at both BRMC and OGH. He is the Medical Director for both hospitals’ Dialysis Units, and currently serves as Chief of Medicine at Olean General Hospital. Dr. Javed is also a member of the Board of Directors at Upper Allegheny Health System, and is actively involved with several medical research projects. He has presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) and the Annual Conference on Peritoneal Dialysis.  Dr. Javed has an active Peritoneal Dialysis Program, and established one of the first hemodialysis programs in Western New York.

In addition to his contributions at both hospitals, Dr. Javed has been an active participant in area medical education programs. He is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor and mentors students in the Family Practice Program at the University at Buffalo. He is also involved in St. Bonaventure University’s Pre-Medical Program, where he provides guidance to students seeking a career in medicine.
