Diabetes Education

The key to managing diabetes is controlling blood glucose (sugar) levels and other factors that may cause complications. The Olean General Hospital offers many educational programs. Mary K. Fay, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator and Barbara Walker, Registered Nurse and Certified Diabetes Educator provide direction and assistance in helping individual patients manage their diabetes.
Group Classes
Each patient is provided an initial assessment session to determine their personal educational needs prior to attending class. Classes are offered at least 11 times per year and are held on three consecutive Wednesdays or Saturdays either from 9 am - 12 noon or 6 pm - 9 pm. Most insurances pay for classes.
Individual Counseling
When appropriate, individual counseling is available for patients including children and gestational diabetes patients.

Most insurances pay all or part of the education fees, including Medicare.
Diabetes Support Group
In addition to the above, OGH hosts a free monthly Diabetes Support Group that is open to the public on the third Tuesday of every month (except December) at 6:30 pm in the Education Center. The group has a variety of speakers each of whom discusses an aspect of diabetes management.
