American Diabetes Association

Recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education. The American Diabetes Association Recognizes this education service as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education

The key to managing diabetes is controlling blood glucose (sugar) levels and other factors that may cause complications. The Olean General Hospital offers many educational programs. Staff provide direction and assistance in helping individual patients manage their diabetes.

Group Classes

Each patient is provided an initial assessment session to determine their personal educational needs prior to attending class. Classes are offered at least 11 times per year and are held on three consecutive Wednesdays or Saturdays either from 9 am - 12 noon or 6 pm - 9 pm. Most insurances pay for classes.

Individual Counseling

When appropriate, individual counseling is available for patients including children and gestational diabetes patients.

Important topics relating to Diabetes Management include:

  • Diet, Nutrition and Meal Planning
  • Insulin Administration
  • Blood Glucose Testing
  • Insulin Pump Education
  • Exercise
  • Sick Day Management
  • Foot, Dental and Eye Care
  • Medications

Most insurances pay all or part of the education fees, including Medicare.

Diabetes Support Group

In addition to the above, OGH hosts a free quarterly Diabetes Support Group that is open to the public in the Education Center at 515 Main Street. The group has a variety of speakers each of whom discusses an aspect of diabetes management.

Please contact the Diabetes Department at (716) 375-4127 or email bwalker@ogh.org to obtain the schedule or to learn more about our services for diabetes management.
