Diabetes Education

American Diabetes Association

Recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education. The American Diabetes Association Recognizes this education service as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education

The Olean General Hospital Diabetes Education Program was the first American Diabetes Association Recognized Program west of the Hudson River.The key to managing diabetes is controlling blood glucose (sugar) levels and other factors that may cause complications. The Olean General Hospital offers many educational programs. Staff provide direction and assistance in helping individual patients manage their diabetes.

Group Classes

Each patient is provided an initial assessment session to determine their personal educational needs prior to attending class. Classes are offered at least 11 times per year and are held on once a week for three weeks. Please check your own insurance coverage.

Individual Counseling

When appropriate, individual counseling is available for patients including children and women with gestational diabetes.

Important topics relating to Diabetes Management include:

  • Diet, Nutrition and Meal Planning
  • Insulin Administration
  • Blood Glucose Testing
  • Exercise
  • Sick Day Management
  • Foot, Dental and Eye Care
  • Medications

Diabetes Support Group

In addition to the above, OGH hosts a free quarterly Diabetes Support Group that is open to the public in the Education Center at 515 Main Street.
