Cancer patients in the Southern Tier will soon have significantly easier access to world-class radiation therapy services. Olean General Hospital, in collaboration with Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has announced plans to open the Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center.
Olean General Hospital will take over the operation of Regional Cancer Care at 1415 Buffalo Street in Olean, and all of the professional services will be provided via a collaborative arrangement with Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Ranjit Dhaliwal, M.D., the owner and operator of Regional Cancer Care will be leaving the area to focus on his other business and clinical interests.
“We owe a significant debt of gratitude to Dr. Dhaliwal for his clinical leadership with respect to the care of cancer patients in this community,” said Timothy J. Finan, President and CEO of Olean General Hospital. “We are pleased to continue offering radiation oncology services to patients in the Olean area, and particularly pleased to offer it in affiliation with Roswell Park. This affiliation represents a significant enhancement in healthcare for the Southern Tier.”
The Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center will be equipped with a Varian Linear Accelerator. This state of the art radiation therapy technology will allow patients in Olean to receive the same level of radiation medicine that cancer patients receive at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. The linear accelerator is designed to deliver Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) that enables radiation oncologists to deliver treatment more accurately. The equipment also provides respiratory gating and portal imaging for precision focus.
This state of the art technology will allow the Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center of Olean General Hospital to treat all cancers that respond to radiation therapy, including prostate, breast, head and neck, lung, colorectal, and brain tumors.
Under the terms of a clinical services agreement for radiation medicine, Roswell Park Cancer Institute will provide full-time on-site radiation oncology physicians and full-time medical physicists to treat patients at the center and oversee all treatment planning and quality assurance activities. In addition to a state of the art linear accelerator, the center will also have CT Simulator for treatment planning. Advanced CT/PET scanning is available on the Olean General Hospital campus to complement treatment options.
“This is an historic time for all of us at Olean General Hospital and the region. What was a vision has become a reality. We are bringing the clinical expertise and unparalleled reputation of Roswell Park to patients in our community,” said Mr. Finan. “There will no longer be a need for Olean area patients who require radiation for their cancer treatment to travel to Buffalo to receive these services. This affiliation underscores the commitment of Olean General Hospital and Roswell Park Cancer Institute to provide the highest level of radiation oncology care close to home for patients living here in the Southern Tier.”
“For two health care organizations so rich in history and tradition, this affiliation will allow us to extend and expand the availability of quality cancer care throughout the region,” said Donald Trump MD, RPCI President and Chief Executive Officer. “It also serves as a model for the community-based delivery of cancer care in which Olean General Hospital health care professionals will work in tandem with the team of physicians, physicists, dosimetrists, technicians and other support staff at RPCI for the benefit of all cancer patients seeking care at The Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center.”
The Center will also offer advanced audio/visual teleconferencing to allow radiation oncologists in Olean to consult in real- time with staff at Roswell Park in Buffalo whenever necessary.
“Electronic teleconferencing essentially puts all of us in the same room at the same time,” said Michael Kuettel, MD, MBA, PhD, Chairman of the Department of Radiation Medicine at Roswell Park. “Together we will be able to do such things as view CT scans, examine tissue slides, and discuss treatment protocols and clinical trials to provide the Olean General Hospital radiation medicine patients with the same the same level of care available in Buffalo.”
According to Mr. Finan, the Center has been named in honor of Mildred Milliman, in recognition and appreciation for her exemplary generosity over the years to the hospital and its mission of care and service.
“She has a heart of gold and a heart for healthcare. She cares deeply about the people in this community and about the care that is available to them,” said Mr. Finan. “We are enormously grateful to Mrs. Milliman and are very pleased to name this extraordinary center in honor of this extraordinary woman.”
