Olean General Hospital (OGH) hosted its annual reception on Thursday, May 26 for residents in the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo’s rural track family medicine residency program. The program, which is affiliated with Olean General, provides residents with a comprehensive exposure to the practice of medicine in a rural environment.
“Our hospital is committed to the education and training of future physicians through active involvement in medical education at multiple levels,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System and member hospitals Bradford Regional Medical Center and Olean General Hospital. “We’re pleased to be affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo and sponsor the only rural track family medicine residency program in New York State.”
Program residents spend an initial year in Buffalo and their second and third years in Olean working at Universal Primary Care’s (UPC) Family Medicine Center in the hospital’s health services building. The program is directed by full time, on-site University at Buffalo faculty members.
This year, the hospital recognized the graduation of Priyanka Patnaik, MBBS and Nupur Batra, MBBS from the program. Two residents—Anil Kopparapu, MBBS and Harpreet Singh, MBBS—will be entering their third and final year, while Kelvin Gold, M.D. and Amandeep Singh, MBBS will be transitioning from Buffalo to Olean in their second year of residency.
Dr. Kopparapu will take over as chief resident, and will be responsible for scheduling didactic teaching sessions with area doctors for residents, along with managing the on-call schedule for members of the program.
“With New York State’s only rural track family medicine program, our likelihood of recruiting and retaining quality physicians to the local area is significantly enhanced,” said William Mills, M.D., MMM, CPE, FACPE, CMSL, FAAFP, Senior Vice President of Quality and Professional Affairs for Upper Allegheny Health System. “This program not only benefits the residents involved, but it has a positive impact on our community, our hospital and our patients.”
