Olean General Hospital’s commitment to quality and patient safety was recently recognized by the American Hospital Association’s Hospitals In Pursuit Of Excellence (HPOE – www.hpoe.org) website.
The site featured a full write-up of the hospital’s new closed-loop medication safety initiative.
Led by Leroy Hanchett, Ph.D. Pharm. D., director of the pharmacy, the new system seeks to automate the medication process utilizing barcode scanning. From the moment medications arrive at the pharmacy to the point they are handed to the patient, barcodes are used to confirm the type of medication, dosage, and patient for whom they are intended.
The new system utilizes a robotic unit in the pharmacy that picks and fills each patient’s daily medications, mobile computer carts on the nursing units, and a computerized physician order entry system.
Considered the new gold-standard in medication safety, Olean General’s new system is designed to reduce errors in picking and distributing medications. The article by HPOE is a recognition of the groundbreaking strides that Olean General hospital is taking in reducing errors and improving patient safety.
