Olean General Hospital (OGH) honored three retiring physicians at a breakfast recognition ceremony on Thursday, July 14. Zaheer Babar, M.D., Thomas Lutz, M.D. and Paul Schwach, M.D. were each recognized by hospital officials for their years of dedication and quality service to patients in the greater Olean area.
“These three physicians have each provided tremendous care to the people of our region,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System and member hospitals Bradford Regional Medical Center and Olean General Hospital. “On behalf of Olean General Hospital, I thank them for their service, and wish them well in retirement.”
Dr. Babar moved to Olean in 1989 and became one of the area’s first gastroenterologists. He played a significant role in the establishment of the Digestive Disease Center at Olean General and has worked diligently to ensure various patient safety and quality measures. Following 22 years of service, Dr. Babar will retire and spend more time with his wife and four children.
“Dr. Babar has been a pioneer for gastroenterology in the region,” said William Mills M.D., MMM, CPE, FACPE, CMSL, FAAFP, Senior Vice President of Quality and Professional Affairs at Upper Allegheny Health System. “Without his efforts, the Digestive Disease Center at Olean General Hospital would not exist. We sincerely appreciate all that he’s done for the Olean community and our hospital.”
Dr. Lutz first came to Olean in 1996 as a locum tenens – a physician who substitutes temporarily for another member of the same profession – in oncology. After serving in that capacity for several months, the Olean Medical Group asked him to join the staff on a full-time basis, and he has been working there since. Dr. Lutz has been an active member of the Olean community, and will now have additional time to travel and visit his family.
“Dr. Lutz was a tremendous professional who motivated and inspired each of his patients with his candor and wit,” said Katie Watkins, Nurse Manager at Olean General Hospital. “Our staff appreciated his professional knowledge and personal kindness. We will certainly miss him.”
Dr. Schwach joined Olean Medical Group in September of 1981. Aside from his professional accomplishments, he has been very active in the community, working with the Boy Scouts of America and serving as a Eucharistic Minister at his church. Dr. Schwach looks forward to spending his retirement with his family.
“Dr. Schwach is a very gentle and spiritual man, and every patient that he touched was blessed,” said Karen Fohl, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Olean General Hospital. “He was an excellent orthopedic surgeon who made every patient feel like his only patient.”
