OGH Chest Pain Center Earns PCI Accreditation
Posted on: 10/14/2014
The Olean General Hospital Chest Pain Center has earned accreditation from the Society for Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) for its quality performance in Percutaneous Cardiac Intervention (PCI). Last September, the hospital’s Chest Pain Center received accreditation from the SCPC for performance in assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with chest pain, only the ninth hospital in New York State to do so. This most recent accreditation recognizes the hospital’s adherence to the Society’s stringent standard in interventional cardiac catheterization procedures such as angiography, stent placement and balloon angioplasty.
This most recent accreditation was achieved in less than one year of operation of the Olean General Hospital/Gates Vascular Institute Interventional Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. It is the first and only program in the region to earn full Chest Pain Center accreditation with PCI.
The Olean General Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory opened October 1, 2013 and performed 600 catheterizations in its first year of operation, exceeding all initial volume expectations.
“This accomplishment demonstrates that our Chest Pain Center, working in collaboration with our new Interventional Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, is performing at a level equal to or better than heart programs in larger cities,” said Timothy J. Finan, CEO, Upper Allegheny Health System and Olean General Hospital. “Achieving PCI accreditation for our Chest Pain Center in less than one year of opening our interventional catheterization laboratory is a credit to the OGH physicians and staff, our partners at Kaleida Health’s Gates Vascular Institute and our Emergency Medical Service providers.”
“Clearly, the Chest Pain Center and interventional cardiac catheterization laboratory have responded to what were critical delivery system deficits in our region” Finan said. “Southwestern New York State suffers from one of the highest rates of cardiac disease and cardiac mortality in New York State. Our accredited Chest Pain Center and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory are making a difference - saving hearts, and saving lives,” he added.
Finan said that prior to the opening of the lab, “area residents had to travel to larger cities to access interventional cardiac procedures. No more. We now find and fix heart problems, right here, close to home.”
“We are all very proud of our cardiovascular team members, who have shown their expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and undergoing an onsite review by a team of SPCP’s accreditation review specialists,” said Ahmad Hilal, MD, Chest Pain Center Medical Director. “Along with maintaining excellence in our clinical efforts, we will continue to emphasize community education and awareness to combat heart disease, which in many cases is preventable.”
