First Annual Golf to Fight Cancer Event Raises Money for Regional Cancer Care

More than 300 people participated in the Olean General Hospital (OGH) Foundation’s first annual “Golf to Fight Cancer” event on Wednesday at Bartlett Country Club in Olean.
The inaugural event helped raise funds for cancer care in the Olean community, with proceeds being used to purchase a gamma finder, which is a piece of equipment that allows surgeons to easily and accurately identify cancerous lymph nodes during sentinel node biopsies of the breast. Excess funds are earmarked to support other cancer needs at the Milliman Radiation Medicine Center.
“I’d like to thank everyone who joined us in support of our efforts to enhance our ability to assist cancer patients,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System and member hospitals Bradford Regional Medical Center and Olean General Hospital. “We had a tremendous turnout, and the funds we raised will allow us to continue our mission of providing best-in-class care to those with this disease.”
Former St. Bonaventure men’s basketball coach Ron DeCarli, a cancer survivor, served as the keynote speaker. Mercy Flight performed a fly-over before tee-off, dropping 100 golf balls into the 18th fairway to help kickoff the tournament.
“Our goal for this event was to raise $30,000 to help further enhance the quality of cancer care in the Olean area,” said Karen Fohl, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Olean General Hospital and OGH Foundation President. “Thanks to the generous support of our community, our foundation is confident that we will reach that goal.”
Headlining sponsors of the tournament included The Exigence Group, Olean Medical Group, Park Centre Development, Inc. and Upper Allegheny Health System’s Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine.
